We have been in Avila Beach for the last 11 days. It is a beautiful bay that is active with fish, seals and we even saw a few whales. Jon & Cindy are joining us today and then we are heading north to Moss Landing.

On Sunday, we went to Winchester to visit with Todd, Renee, Brittany, Jacob, Maegan, Starla, Sierra, Brendan, and Evan. It was great to see them all. The kids made us welcome home cards that were so sweet and unique. We visited for awhile and then went to the park. We are blessed to have such a wonderful family. Jacob is now taller than I am. (maybe I am just shrinking)

Back to Brea

Here we are back in Brea with Josh! We have missed everyone so much!!!! Josh was happy to have some of Mom's vegetables and salad, I think he liked the salmon too. I just loved being together. I think he has grown, was he this much taller than me 5 months ago?

Heading South

After leaving Newport we moved further south to Sacramento where we visited with Jeff's twin, Jenifer, as well as her lovely family. Angie was so kind to give Cindy and me facials which we throughly enjoyed. Jen, Ray and Jaynee put on a great BBQ for us and we continued to catch up on the family news. Tyson thought he was going to get to skip 1st grade and hot the road with us...maybe next time buddy.

Next stop Moss Landing. We love Moss Landing. We were here last year and once again we enjoyed the sea life as well as the beauty of Monterey. We ate at Phil's again and it did not disappoint. Jon and Cindy also fell in love with this great area.

From there we met our RV club in Paso Robles where we tasted a bit of wine and played some golf. What a great reunion. We have some really great friends and feel very blessed.

On to Long Beach, which was where our journey first began, May 1st ~ 9500 miles ago. Our son-in-laws fibbed to our daughters and managed to pull off a surprise dinner. It was so great to see them all. They all looked great and happy. Corey was still struggling with the crutches, but doing better daily.

We are back at the Canyon RV Park in Anaheim where we will see our other kids and most of the grandkids. I have missed them all so much!

Coming Home

We are in Grants Pass, Oregon. This is our last stop before crossing the state line into California. We are so excited to see our kids, grand kids and friends.

Since we got back into the lower 48, we have visited with friends and family and slowly traveled south.

Our first stop was Hayden, Idaho with Jim and Bev. I have known Bev for many years, but never had the opportunity to spend this much time one on one. We had a great time and it seemed each new subject that came up we found things in common. Thanks Jim and Bev for a great time.

Next stop, Snohomish for a mini family reunion. AJ, Isabel, Linda and Dennis flew up to visit with us. Ben, Megan, Keith, KJ and Gavin came to visit ~ Ben & Kathy, you have a great family. Jon & Cindy drove up and the 10 of us had so many laughs and a great time. We went to Hat Island to visit with Ben's parents Dwight & Claire. They have a beautiful home filled with Claire's incredible art. Ben, I can tell where you get the gentle side. It was great to catch up with family and to be with Jon & Cindy. Ben & Kathy are great hosts as always. We miss you already.

Jon & Cindy will be traveling with us from here to Paso Robles...I hope they can put up with us that long.

From there we went to Raymond, Washington to visit with Jon's Aunt Leah. She and her husband Dwayne have a great home overlooking the river. Leah has a unique vocabulary and a great laugh (not in that order). Thanks guys for sharing your town with us.

Then it felt like we were returning home. We went to Newport, Oregon where we spent almost a month last year. Scott was there to greet us. We cooked out and met some very interesting people from Malibu. Then, Anne and Ron joined us (we met them last year and have stayed in touch), Gary and Roxy drove up to be with us all. We had a great time, met some new people Carol, Jim, Tim and Kathy. Again we laughed until our jaws ached. So much fun in this incredibly beautiful place. I wasn't ready to leave, I think I could live here if it weren't so far away from my family.

At my age I cherish my old friends and feel it is sometimes difficult to make new ones, but Jim, Bev, Anne, Ron and Scott have proven that theory wrong. I feel so lucky to continue to grow as a person through our travels, but more importantly through relationships.

So, we are heading south and getting so excited to see family and friends that we miss so much.

Okanagan Valley

We discovered the Okanagan Valley in southern British Columbia. We really didn't know this area, so we were surprised to discover this beautiful valley. There are lakes all around with rivers connecting them. The valley currently has 77 wineries and over 40 golf courses. The hills are covered in grapes and the orchards are full of peaches, nectarines, plums and apricots. The gardens are ripe with tomatoes, squash and corn. needless to say this is a great place for us to hang out for a few days.

We took a little time to pack away our Alaskan jackets, gloves and hats! We have a lot of space now to get out some summer clothes and get ready for some golf.

Terrace, B.C. CANADA

We are back on solid ground in Canada. We are very happy to be back in our rig, the berth was pretty confining. It was fun watching the whales and sea life and not having to cook or do dishes :) We are trying to decide our route back to Bonners Ferry, Idaho, if anyone knows the roads, please advise.

Juneau

We are in Juneau, we put the rig and car on a ferry and had a beautiful boat ride to Juneau. We saw whales and more glaciers. We are in Juneau for a few days before loading back on the ferry for two days, then arriving in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada. We have seen so many bears and salmon. What an awesome trip!

Going to Valdez

I'm sure you have seen the photos and videos of Cooper's Landing and Whittier...we are so in love with Alaska. We are heading to Valdez and we hear it is like Seward but more dramatic. We will let you know.

Leaving Homer

We are leaving Homer today and going fishing in the Kenai River. Homer has been amazing and we have enjoyed every moment. The weather changes in a second and the ocean can be glass one moment and a very angry sea the next. The glaciers are alive with changing colors and shadows that can only be captured in your heart. Before we left home, I told Karen that I couldn't understand why people would visit Alaska year after year, I get it now.

A pair of eagles live nearby and come over to visit a few times every day, so we have watched them look for food and when they find it they share with each other, but not with the seagulls.

We ran into a crazy bar last night, the Salty Dawg. This fun place actually gives you a marker and a cup of thumbtacks so that you can add to the THOUSANDS of dollar bills hung all around the bar with messages on them. I didn't have my camera last night but it was great.

Homer

We are currently staying in Homer on the spit. This is a great park facing the Cook Inlet and the Kachemak Bay. The view from the front of our rig is the ice and glaciers of the Aleutian Range. It is amazing to think that on the other side of these mountains is the Bering Sea and beyond that Russia. We watch eagles catching fish from the front of our rig. Absolutely incredible. This, again, is one of our favorite spots.

Today the Talberts are leaving Homer and starting their trip toward home. We will rejoin in Snohomish, Washington. We have loved traveling with them and wish them exciting, safe travels. We will also miss them.

Ninilchik

We visited a city named Ninilchik. This city is a quaint fishing village that was first settled by Russians seeking retirement. The Russian Orthodox church was built in 1911 and is still actively used by it's village. The people still dress in the fashion of the Russians. We found this beautiful fishing village to be a great day trip.

Eagle

Jeff loves Eagles so you can imagine how fun this was for him to discover an eagle nest behind our park. He captured this Eagle picking up a small fish from the stream. This is really cool to watch. Their vision is so keen and they are very quick.

Exit Glacier

We took a hike to see Exit Glacier, it is one of over 20 glaciers that make up the Harding Icefield. (named after President Harding) The expanse of the icefield is over 607,805 acres in the Kenai Fjords National Park. The ice here is several thousand feet deep. The colors change as the sun moves through clouds. The ice is very much alive as it recedes and advances.

Fishing in Seward

One of the top things we wanted to do was fish in Seward. We chartered a boat and departed at 6:30 AM. We wanted to catch halibut and silver salmon. We almost hit our limit on both and we caught a lingcod as a bonus. Lingcod grow at a rate of 1 pound per year, our captain estimated this guy was around 70-80#. We also caught a stingray, a shark, lots of pollock and black cod. The black cod and pollock we threw back but we kept over 120# of halibut and salmon.

Seward highway

We went to Anchorage for a few days mainly to restock. We did play a round of golf at Moose Run which was fun and Roxy shot the best round of her life with an 88.

Then we were off to Seward...the Kenai! Once we turned the corner and were on the ocean it was like a constant postcard. The mountains and ocean were incredible. The sky was a beauty of it's own. We have lots of pictures posted on the photo link but here is a sample.

Talkeetna

What a cute little town this is! Located close to Denali surrounded by mountains and rivers, this is a great place to spend a few days.

This weekend there is a big event, a moose dropping contest. They paint moose dropping and number them, you can buy one for 20 dollars. Then they fly over a target, drop the droppings and which ever number hits closest to the target, wins the droppings, just kidding they win the money. The festivities include a parade and lots of other fun things.

Yesterday we went fishing for king salmon. The guide service provided waders and all necessary equipment. Gary and Roxy went with us and I had a great time. I caught 2 King Salmon, although you can only keep one. I threw the first one back as it only weighed around 12 pounds, luckily the second one weighed around 25 pounds. I caught those two fish within the first 5 minutes so we thought it was going to be an active fishing day. However, those were the only fish caught. Of course I did NOT brag (too much), but happily took the money for the bets. We cooked salmon for dinner using the recipe we had previously used (in the recipe blog) and it was the best we had ever eaten. Sorry Katie, hopefully more people than me will catch fish next time and I can mail some to you.

Note in the pictures, Gary has his waders on the wrong feet. One of his waders also had a hole in it, the water temperature was around 38, he complained all day. One of mine had a hole also, but when you catch the fish the rest doesn't matter.

From Tok to Denali

We went from Tok to Fairbanks. Fairbanks is flat in geography, which surprised us, as we have seen so many mountains. We went to the University museum and enjoyed learning more history and understanding the local geographical elements that make Alaska so unique.

We drove from Fairbanks to Denali. Once again we are going into mountain ranges with so many different tree species. Denali is a very large National park which surrounds Mt. McKinley. We drove around the area and enjoyed seeing a couple of large grey wolves.

We are going to Talkeetna today where we hope to go on our first fishing trip. King Salmon are running in this area.

Top of the World Highway

We knew that the "Top of the world Highway" would be our most difficult road to travel. We stayed in Dawson an extra day to make sure we had good weather. We prepared the rig and tow the night before and set our clock for 6AM to assure that we would be in line for the ferry by 7AM. We knew the ferry hours started at 8AM and the ferry would only hold one big rig and a couple of cars. We had seen the line for the ferry and knew it could be hours if we didn't get there early. So we were ready...we got in line at 7AM... behind 14 other big rigs.

We crossed the Yukon River on the ferry at 9AM. It was fun to ride across the river in the motorhome and we were finally on the Top of the World highway. It proved to be everything we had heard; absolutely beautiful mountain ranges that seemd to go on forever. We could see for hundreds of miles and it was incredible.

The road is a different story; pot holes, gravel, ice heaves, washboard, hairpin turns and narrow edges. There were places if we had passed another bus or rig, one of us would have gone over the edge. This was truly a white knuckle day for us both. We were very happy to be down the mountain and into Tok, Alaska. Yes, Alaska! We had finally arrived in Alaska. We were both exhausted and happy the park we stayed in offered dinner and entertainment. They served reindeer chili in a sourdough bowl. (I guess Santa is walking this year) We enjoyed not having to go anywhere and just recovering.

Dawson City continued

We decided to stay another day in Dawson to let the driving conditions improve. We played golf at a very fine establishment, Top of the World Golf Course, Western Hills has some competition. We saw a cute little fox and the weather is beautiful. I think it will be even better tomorrow for our drive to Alaska. If you click on a picture it will enlarge. Dawson City, Yukon

We are in Dawson City for a few days. We went to a show in town last night, a can-can type entertainment at the local casino. This is a non-profit casino and all the profits are returned to the city to help the local citizens. It was really fun.

Today is Canada Day and we went into town to see the celebration. It was pouring rain but the celebration went on. There was a gold panning championship. Each contestant is given a bucket of dirt and rocks. A certain amount of gold is placed in each bucket, then they are timed as to how quickly they find the gold. The contestants do not know how many pieces of gold are in the dirt. When they are finished they raise their pan. The winner is a combination of time and amount of gold found.

We were planning to travel to Tok, Alaska tomorrow but the weather does not look good, so we will probably stay here another day. The forecast looks great for Thursday. You can see the ferry above that we will be taking across the Yukon before the "top of the world" highway.

Dawson City

We are in Dawson City, Yukon. This is our last stop heading north in Canada. Today is Canada Day, a national celebration here and the city has lots of festivities that we will be enjoying with our new Canadian friends.

This is an old gold mining town that is located on the Yukon river. Very quaint and full of history.

We went to the top of a mountain, called the dome, where we could see an awesome view from every direction. Here are a couple of pictures, when we get to Fairbanks (by July 4th) we should have the connections speeds that will allow us to upload our videos and more photos.

Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada

We are in Whitehorse, YT, Canada. We have been here for 2 nights and we will be here one more night. This is the largest town in the Yukon, so we are stocking up and doing a few maintenance things.

We discovered a fish none of us had tried, Char. Char is an Arctic fish that is delicious. My main goal for the day is to go to the fish market and buy Char.

When we leave here, we will be heading to Dawson City and the to the "top of the world highway". We will cross into Alaska at that point. We plan to celebrate Canada Day, July 1st, in Dawson City, Canada, and then July 4th in Fairbanks, Alaska. The Talberts are not going to the top of the world, but instead are heading south and around the Klondike Loop then they will meet us in Tok, Alaska before going into Fairbanks.

We are having difficulty loading Papa Gibby's campsite videos, due to slow connection speeds. I hope to resolve this soon. We do have phone service here, so if you want to call us this would be a good place, I don't know what the next few towns provide. We miss our family and friends but are truly having a wonderful adventure.

Watson Lake

We had a good day to travel. The weather was overcast and not much rain. We saw bison, bear, wild horses and a red fox. This area is vast and heavily forested.

We were excited to be among over 60,000 people who have hung a sign in the "Sign Post Forest". This started from a soldier that was homesick and hung a sign with his hometown on it. Well as you can see a lot of people have hung signs. There are signs made from shoes, bedpans, you name it. We hung a "Seale" sign. This is my maiden name and in honor of my Dad, we chose this sign. He would have loved this trip, the beautiful scenery and especially the wildlife. Here's to you Dad, I miss you and wish you were still here with us.

Lake Muncho Day 2

We went to the Laird hot springs today. These are by far the most natural hot springs we have visited. You walk back into the forest for about 1/2 mile then the pools are among what looks like the tropics. Really beautiful, relaxing and fun. This was the first time the Talberts have ever been in a natural hot spring, and they loved it. We met a girl on the trip here that told us "a bear will eat you there for no good reason, eh". We had no bear encounters, just another great day.

trip to Muncho Lake

We drove to Muncho Lake where we saw beautiful water falls and were surprised by our first bison. Bison move in herds and protect their babies in between the larger animals. Very cool to see and watch. Muncho Lake is another beautiful blue ~ green lake. This one is not glacier fed, but gets the color from the minerals in the area, especially copper oxide. The park is great, we are positioned to where we look out our front window and see the lake.

Dawson Creek

We drove our initial run to Dawson Creek. This is Mile Zero for the Alaskan highway. We are packed into an Rv park like sardines. I will now look at the Provincial parks as we drove through a few of those and they are more what we are looking for.

Jasper hot springs and the tram

Yesterday was our second day in Jasper. We decided to go to the hot springs and then up the tram (our friend Bill told us not to miss this). The Talberts had other plans so off we went.

We ran into three elks before we ever left the park. They were so passive we could have almost walked up to them. The drive to the hot springs was beautiful and we saw bear, mountain ram, mountain goats and of course more elk. We also saw a white tail deer ~ really different from anything we had seen.

We planned to meet the Talberts at 5:00 for a tram ride. Their day had taken a different course so they couldn't join us. We rode up the 7 minute tram. It was so incredible. We were at about 8000 feet, above the tree line. At this height here, it can snow at any time any day of the year. We took lots of beautiful pictures. The lakes were incredible. There are so many lakes that have no roads to access. I guess I need to be a more advanced hiker to see all this beautiful country has to offer. It was so cold outside! We got in line to take out 7 minute trip back down the tram. The attendant announced that we had a short wind delay. They don't move the tram in high winds for safety sake. So we took a few more shots, had some hot chocolate and then it started to snow! How fun! Well we came back down the tram 2 1/2 hours later, but safely.

Have I mentioned that the Canadians are kind, and polite and their accent makes them sound happy all the time. Someone had emailed us from the OCR article and mentioned that Canadians are really easy going nice people. We agree and love the attitude they have.

First Day at Jasper

Talberts joined us in Radium, we played golf at Gray Wolf and love it. Then we drove from Radium to Jasper. What a beautiful drive! Enjoy these picts and then when I get a better connection I will send more photos.

Banff & Lake Louise

Today we drove to Banff and Lake Louise. It rained and was pretty chilly. The photos at Lake Louise, I had 4 jackets on. There is really no place that we have ever seen as beautiful as Lake Louise. The colors are awesome, some of these photos don't give it it's due credit. Maybe we can go back in the sun. Honestly, it didn't matter to us, we love it there. Another thing we couldn't capture is that between the mountains that feed into the lake there is a giant glacier. The white glacier and the white sky blend together. (If there is a photographer keeping up with us, please help ~ Jebb ~) We saw two really cool elks and probably 8 deers. I will post the photos as soon as I can. Until then enjoy an idea of what this is like.

Carvings and Rams

We didn't mention it when we were in Hope, but Hope is the capital of chain saw carvings. We saw carved bears, deer, elk, eagles etc. Yesterday, here in Radium we ran across our favorite carvings, beautiful life size carvings of the stations of the cross.

We also ran across a group of mountain rams. Does anyone know what function those horns have? Starla, I bet you know.

We left Hope, BC for a short trip to Kamloops. The weather was rain, snow, and even sun. When we arrived in Kamloops we decided to keep going and found a great lake! Shuswap Lake! We decided to try to find a campsite at the lake...we found a single lane covered bridge. We always say "a bend in the road is not the end of the road, unless you fail to make the turn" today we learned that sometimes you put the sucker in reverse for about a half of a mile or so...

We ended up in Revelstoke in a quite, peaceful park.

Bridal Veil Falls, BC, Canada

The rain was relentless, but we were too and went to see the Bridal Falls Waterfalls. We also drove up to see Harrison Hot Springs. The clouds prevented us from seeing much of the lake, but we do have some shots of the falls. The last shot is a waterfall directly behind our RV site.

Canada

We made it to Canada! No problems at the border. We saw a beautiful waterfall, and then another and another and another! The trees and mountains are awesome. Then we went to Hell's Gate on the Frasier River. Unbelievably powerful river gorge.

Bend & the OCR

We are still in Bend, Oregon. We are having some service work done on our RV. We are at the Bend Service Center and they have been terrific, helping us fine tune this beast before the big trip.

It has rained EVERY day since we arrived, so our activities have been restricted. Let's just be honest and say we have eaten our way through the last week. Bend has some great restaurants and bars.

Among our favorites, Blacksmiths ~ the lounge is great, the food ~ so so. High Tides, we went expecting greatness because we had been to Tital Waves, in Newport (same owners) and it was great, High Tides, only average. Zedego, really good food, great waitress.

Our favorite in town Typhoons. Great atmosphere, awesome food. Jeff had a clam chowder made with coconut milk and lemongrass, that was by far the best clam chowder we have ever had. We happened to meet the COO, Rick, who promised to try and get me a recipe from the owner Bo. She is writing a cookbook that I am looking forward to.

If the sun will peak out, we will get some pictures today at Smith Rock...

On another note, an article was published in the Orange County Register yesterday about our story. Thank you Keith and Jebb, nice job. The response has been a lot of fun and we look forward to your ideas and will respond to the emails as quickly as we can.

New Plans

We have been in Bend for a few days. We have changed our original route a couple of times. This area has experienced the greatest snowfall in the last decade. Many roads are still closed. Many lakes are close to overflowing and the rivers are full. These conditions are preventing us from going into Yellowstone as we had planned. The weather continues to be rainy and the forecast looks the same.

The joy of no schedule and no plan is being able to adapt. So we are heading north. Central Washington looks warmer and drier. Then a visit with Kathy & Ben (Jeff's sister & her husband)in Snohomish. From Snohomish we will visit Victoria Island and then east in British Columbia to Banff. Our only schedule is to meet the Talberts on June 20th in Jasper.

Rogue River & Crater Lake

We drove up to Crater Lake, following the Rogue River. The river was amazing, we hiked to a natural bridge formed by lava where the river flows at 4 feet per second. Then there is Crater Lake...WOW...we were overwhelmed with its beauty, stillness and awe. It was breathtaking. It looked like a mirror, a piece of glass reflecting calm. I will put together a photo group for you, but for now here's a couple of shots. Nate, this one is for you.

Lake Tahoe to Medford

We left Lake Tahoe planning to go to Klammath Falls. In route, we decided to stop at Eagle Lake which is close to Susanville. Eagle lake is a large spring fed lake that has the famous "Eagle Lake Trout". These trout are exported throughout the U.S. as well as Europe because of their size and ability to adapt to different places.

On Sunday we left Eagle Lake for a 2 hour trip to Klammath Falls. We arrived at the park where we were planning to stay it was not what we were looking for, so we went to another one...really bad, we went to a third one...really bad. We decided to go look at the Running Y Resort to see another side of this town. Running Y area is beautiful, so if you go to Klammath Falls great place to visit., however nothing for RVs. We decided to drive across highway 66 to Medford. This road's distance is about 60 miles. We were about 40 miles into this drive, which was really tight with lots of hairpin turns, when we saw a sign that said no trucks over 50 feet. We are 40 feet plus a tow car. There was no place to turn around, or remove the tow, so we continued. We come very close to two headon collisions. This was so scary! We made it safely to Medford and found a beautiful park called the Rouge River State Park. After a vodka, we both collapsed. What a day! Jeff is a great driver and I know none of the Alaska highways will be as tough as Hwy 66 in Oregon.

We are almost ready to leave for the "last frontier". Tonight we are having our WHRVC over to say our goodbyes and of course plan our next trip together, which will be our return trip from Alaska. Things are getting exciting and thanks to our kids and friends, we are almost packed and ready to head out.
